1. A description of the areas of the Learning Inventory that you showed improvement.
This semester i really improved in my memory. I used alot of the studying stratogies suggested. Even something as simple as repitition while studying made a noticable difference.
2. A description of the areas of the Learning Inventory that need further growth.
Motivation is something I have been working on since the beginning. Also setting is goals has been really hard for me to impliment. I find it almost depressing setting a goal, i fell like i doubt myself...
3. An explanation of the insights you gained about learning and the things you will carry forward to other courses.
I will definitly keep trying the learning lessons taught in this course. I've even tried explaining to some other friends in schools some of the study techniques I've learned and now use. They love the new studying habits I've developed after the lessons in the book. Although they've never said they would like to take the course, they liked the crash course I delivered!

Stress management

The stress management seminar was slow at the beginning. It was distracting to have some of the people in the class. The videos were a nice touch to break the repetition of the readings. The slideshow was effective. The handouts are probably a waste of paper to most of us, i suggest maybe doing it as a class so you know they are being used. The relaxation tape was very relaxing! The room was a good setting, very comfortable. I dont know if i would ever use the technique taught on the tape, but maybe when i have one of those days i'll know how to unwhined alittle bit.

Ass. # 3

SSC167G Strategies for Success
Assignment 3: Cognition and Metacognition
Jacquie Daniels
October 11, 2007

Part A
The first cognitive strategy I would use this semester is associating learning. In fact I’ve started using it in my biology class already.
Enzyme àEgg
When you heat an egg it changes, just like when you add heat to an enzyme, it changes.
Also I plan on using the outlines method when studying for my schoolwork. It seems to be a shorter way of putting down the most important information.

The metacognative strategy I am already using is planning. In my day planner, among my work and fun time schedule, I plan designated study times, step by step process for a project, and all my homework time.

Part B
After taking the survey, I learned my learning style is the surface approach. I learned that deep learning takes a lot more work then what I am doing now. Deep learning is going above and beyond. Taking extra notes and completely understanding what your reading/ studying is something I am going to try to improve my learning.

Part C
This story spoke of a very strong will and need to succeed. I have not felt this strong of confidence to get something done in a very long time. To be honest, I don’t have a story that relates to the scale of this task. But I do know what it is like to want something so bad, your do everything you can to achieve it.
My story is about a blue ribbon that I wanted more than anything. When I was in high school, my senior year, I had become quite good at riding horses. In fact, I was a member of the all Canadian cowgirls drill team and was a regular at local fairs. I had been trying out different events for horseback riding and had become very good at an event called barrel racing. Some friends were commenting on how much I had improved and how good my times were and they suggested I tried out for the event at a fair! I was so nervous but I realized how bad I wanted to win. So I practiced against the best girls I knew and as time went on, I became competitive, determined and good. To make a long story short, I went to a fair, was put up against the best riders and came out second. It wasn’t the perfect ending, but I was very satisfied that I placed second.
The characteristics and strategies of a self regulated learner are: confidence, determination, practice, willingness to study, and hard work.
I am not very often a self directed learner. I usually need to want something very bad. I only really want something when I am confident in the things I do. I think I need to be more self regulated in my academic life because I know I can do it, but often I feel as though I may fail. If I can gain confidence in my schooling abilities I think that would help me become a more self regulated person.
I agree with Weimer’s comment, college should be a place to develop prowess as learners. But often it is a place where we lose confidence, get bored, and often give up. I notice I often do that, but I also know its important to never give up.

Analysis of my school year so far ..

So far, my classes and marks have all been very good. My studying habits have picked up, and i feel like i'm learning in a deeper way. Surprisingly chemistry and biology are my best marks this semester. I thought for sure they would be the worst, but i feel im understanding everything alot this year! I know i am still a procrastinator, and it doesnt help that i've lost my life planner. Another one of my big flaws, i lose everything. I've fallen behind in this class, this is late as an example. But i know i have to improve, i really want to get into nursing next year and i'll to pull up my socks. School seems to be especially draining somedays, i find it getting harder and harder working 5-10 every night. Im tired all the time. But I think in all my important subjects im doing great!

Resubmitting a not so great assignment #1

I started writing the original ass. # 1 in the night before it was due, mistake number 1. I read over the chapter once and wrote no rough draft for the repot, second mistake. But to be completely honest I thought that would be adequate for this class because, no offense, its only strategies for success.... the nursing program wont look at this. If I was to self asses the first copy i would give me maybe a 6 out of 10. I think the best part of it was it was on time. I round about answered the questions.. At least. I realized when it was handed back that it wasn’t good enough. In the sense that maybe the course doesn’t count for nursing but if I want to be a better student I have to apply myself more even in the things that might not count, because I will get some good out of this class. Learning how to do better is the idea and by applying myself I will better myself. So the second time I re wrote the assignment I took the time to go through the chapter and actively read it, highlighting the important things. I made a rough draft, just in point form of how I would write the report and took the time to do a proper report format.
